Course Structure

Unit 1: Understanding Child Sleep and Development

Build a clear understanding of how sleep works and how it develops from birth through early childhood.

  • What sleep is and why it matters, including the effects of too little sleep
  • Sleep biology: sleep cycles, REM and non-REM sleep, circadian rhythms, sleep pressure, and the roles of melatonin and cortisol
  • How sleep matures, from the newborn “fourth trimester” through infancy and into the toddler years
  • How developmental milestones such as separation anxiety and physical and cognitive leaps can affect sleep
  • Environmental and lifestyle factors, including light, temperature, daylight, activity, screens and feeding times
  • Temperament, sensory needs and individual differences
  • Attachment, co-regulation and the role of caregiver responsiveness
Unit 2: Safe Sleep and Holistic Wellbeing

Understand current safe sleep guidance and how a child’s physical and emotional wellbeing, and their family’s, shapes sleep.

  • Current evidence-informed safe sleep recommendations, including risk and protective factors for SIDS
  • Safe sleep environments at each stage, from cots and safer bed-sharing to toddler and floor beds
  • Helping families make informed decisions about sleep products
  • How illness, discomfort, feeding, teething and common health conditions can affect sleep
  • Emotional wellbeing, stress and the nervous system, and why feeling safe and connected supports sleep
  • Parental wellbeing, fatigue and family circumstances, and how these affect what support is realistic
  • Respecting family values, culture and practical constraints
Unit 3: Sleep Support Strategies and Professional Practice

Put your knowledge into practice. You’ll learn to support families with responsive, evidence-informed approaches tailored to each child, and to work safely within your professional scope.

  • Age-appropriate sleep support approaches, including routines, sleep environments, sleep associations, responsive settling and independent settling
  • Supporting common sleep challenges: night waking, naps and nap transitions, early rising, bedtime resistance, and emotional support around sleep
  • Tailoring support to each child’s individual sleep needs, development and circumstances
  • Gathering information and identifying sleep concerns
  • Communicating with families through active listening, empathy and non-judgemental, inclusive conversation
  • Setting goals together and building parents’ confidence
  • Putting support into practice, monitoring progress, and reviewing or adapting plans
  • Professional boundaries, scope of practice, confidentiality, consent, record keeping and ethical practice
  • Recognising safeguarding concerns and responding appropriately
  • Knowing when sleep support should be paused, and when to refer on

What I Loved:

  • I truly appreciated the involvement of multiple instructors who shared practical, real-life examples.
  • The chance to ask questions during the sessions was precious and helped clarify the material.
  • The course content itself was phenomenal—practical, realistic, and beneficial for families.
  • It’s the kind of knowledge I believe every family should have, as it addresses such a crucial topic with a modern and supportive approach.
  • The course’s philosophy of supporting and empowering families is outstanding. In my experience, many parents struggle alone, and sometimes just a little guidance can significantly improve sleep challenges.

I also want to highlight the exceptional support and feedback from Julie and Kris. Their feedback was the most supportive and constructive I’ve ever received, and it made the entire process an incredibly positive experience for me.

– Dorottya P.

I had a great experience! I found a course that not only addressed the science behind sleep problems but also gave me the insights I was looking for. It can be tough to find reliable, research-backed resources for sleep, so it’s great that LSCS delivered.

– Samera S.

Last year I completed the Sleep Practitioners course and found it very interesting and helpful. It was great that LSCS followed it up to try and get more business by offering 2 coaching sessions.

– Jennifer B.

I found the course very informative, all the tutors were very knowledgeable and approachable, worked well doing the course via zoom

– Rachel L.

I really enjoy the format of the lesson, and assessment, as this put you to work in the research to found solutions and this create a great habit in wanting to learn more and more. This actually put yourself to create your unique way to learn and be confident in your decision when you will use the notions you did learn in the practicality of the job.
Highly recommend

– Tami W.
