Distressing Behaviour: Tantrum vs Meltdowns

This seminar is focused on delivering learners the foundation to distress behaviours in young people. Material will include differentiating distress behaviours, reviewing causes for distress and guidance of support. The aim is to help learners have more confidence in supporting young people through challenging times.

Emotions play a big part in how we think and act. Sometimes, young people experience an emotional reaction so strong that they end up in a state of distress. When distress behaviours are talked about, the terms tantrum and meltdown tend to get used interchangeably. However, tantrums and meltdowns are different.
This session will introduce learners to distress behaviours by reviewing tantrums and meltdowns. The discussion will begin by looking at what tantrums and meltdowns have in common but also what are the key differences between the two. For both types of distress behaviours, learners will be given a scenario and explanation about why each may occur, who is most likely to experience the distress behaviour and how do these challenging times end. Most importantly, learners will be provided the foundation on how to support a young person through each type of distress. This seminar is a foundational piece to understanding what are considered more challenging behaviours (aggression, property damage, cursing), discussion of boundary setting and rethinking consequences.
