We know that language matters. Our word choices express ideas and meanings on the subjects that we are speaking about. Therefore, our word choice when discussing the Autistic community can greatly impact your attitudes toward this community and inform your role as a childcare provider.
The seminar begins with comparing the language created by the medical model of autism to that advocated for by identifying Autistics. This will lead learners into a discussion of understanding the complex and often emotional issues that lead parents to following the medical model language.
Learners will hear how the medical-model language of autism increases stigma of the Autistic community. Importantly, the seminar will also cover how this language perpetuates arbitrary and harmful divisions among Autistics.
The seminar will make clear what language identifying Autistics advocate for in order to create respect of the individual but also cohesion of the community.
Throughout the seminar, learners will come to understand how respectful language of the Autistic community is the foundation of care for Autistic children and acceptance of their neuro-identity.

Looking at autism through an identity-positive lens
What is respectful language about the Autistic community
Clarification of why the Autistic community advocates against functioning labels and levelling
How language guides your care of Autistic young people
