5 Steps to Ofsted Registration
1. Why Register?
Those who are Ofsted registered can be paid using childcare vouchers:
Childcare vouchers, the first £55 per week per employee is exempt from tax and national insurance (and employer’s national insurance) provided registered or approved childcare is used. Proving to be beneficial to the childcare and family.
By registering it shows just how serious you are about your profession as a childcarer. This is because many families pay nannies by childcare vouchers as it is the best financial option they have. This is, therefore, a benefit to them and to you as it will allow you to work for all families.
In addition to the new Tax-Free Childcare scheme for families starting next year, there will be a higher demand for Ofsted registered Nannies. If you are ready to take the next step and begin your application then keep reading.
2. How to start an application
There are 2 ways childcarers can register voluntarily online and via post:
- Online – https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-to-join-the-childcare-register-cr1
- Post – An application form can be directly posted to you. Just contact Ofsted either via email enquiries@ofsted.gov.uk or you can call them on 0300 123 1231
3. Essential Training and documents
- Paediatric First Aid Certificate- Proper training is a requirement for all childcarers to make sure you are prepared for all possible situations, should an accident occur.
- Common Core Skills and Knowledge Certificate- Relevant training is necessary for those with no formal training and are new to the childcare career
- DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) Check- the DBS (formerly CRB) is essential for childcarers to make sure they are able to work with vulnerable people. This is the police and criminal records check.
- Public Liability Insurance- Cover is vital for the childcare. This is in case anything happens to the child/children whilst under their care.
4. Costs
- Ofsted’s current cost of registration – £105 (must be renewed annually, the same price and is usually paid for by the family as being Ofsted registered is a financial saving to them)
- Common Core Skills and Knowledge Course – £75 (online)
- Paediatric First Aid Course – £75
- Enhanced DBS Check (with LSCS) – £75
- Public Liability Insurance- Varies upon insurer
5. How long does all this take?
- First Aid and Common Core Courses can be done in 1 day with LSCS.
- DBS Check – application takes 10 minutes and then processing can take up to 4 weeks
- Ofsted aim to complete applications within 12 weeks
